After a while they couldn’t tell how far away from their home they were, and they couldn’t tell how close to Echo they were. They settled for a crouched speed walk, pausing at every alley intersection to look both ways for lights before crossing. That was a good way to run directly into trouble. Grinning, they gave the alley one last glance and set off. And that made it a lot easier for Riley to see them. With the power out and a dim moon, that was the only way the guards could see. They could see lights bouncing on the main road, but the beams fell short of Riley’s hiding place.Įach of those lights had to be a soldier. Wincing as their feet crunched on the gravel, Riley made their way to the line of buildings at the start of the alleyway and crouched beside a stack of pallets. Sucking in the brisk night air, Riley slipped outside and headed for an alley behind the building that would lead them in a straight line to the fence. ![]()
