Maddie is not deterred. And after Maddie finds Tessie Fine's body, she becomes outraged when she's immediately written out of the story. She moves into a city apartment and starts an affair, discreet by necessity, with an African American policeman, and sets about trying to figure out how to live a life of passion and purpose. Much like Polly, the heroine of Lippman's excellent 2018 novel "Sunburn," Maddie has walked away from her tidy life, and loose cannons - especially those with secrets of their own - can be dangerous.
